As long as the top of the container has the same dimensions as the bottom, then the readings will be accurate. I've used a straight sided bucket and even an old fish tank.

Re: ...pickle beetroot
Hi Puddleduck We just boiled the beets till cooked, rubbed off the skins, sliced them, dropped them into clip top jars, filled these to near the top with Sarsons pickling vinegar, job done. We are also newbies to all this, hence going with the Sarsons rather than making our own pickling liquid. WW :...

Re: pickled beetroot
I stand corrected, SWMBO did just rub off the skins - I got it wrong.
But so glad we didn't mess up by using cold vinegar.
Thanks everybody for the feedback

Re: pickled beetroot
Newbie question
We have just done some pickled beet, using Sarsons pickling vinegar but we didn't heat the vinegar first. Have we messed up?
We did cook, peel and slice the beets though.

Re: family forage
Sounds like you had a great time. We are about to go out to our favourite foraging spot to collect Damsons and Sloes, hoping it is still there. We went last year and the council had used one of those hedge trimmers that attach to a tractor and had hacked the whole hedgerow to pieces, we were gutted....
