brambles

In a few weeks the 2 cubic yards of brambles will have been much reduced in volume. For GBP 34 I'd put it in a pile in a not-too-inconvenient spot in the garden and grow squash or pumpkin over it.

cave dwelling

Oh, that's great! They'll probably get more than the GBP 25,000. I know If I lived in the UK and could spare the money I'd go for it. No way you could find 5 acres of ground here for that money, so in my view you get the wonderful cave house for free :-)

sweet corn

Hi MillyMollyMandy, Thank you very much for putting my mind at ease on the topic of side-shoots. Extra cobs, now I am all in favour of that!

Good luck on your corn-growing. Hope the second batch will be more succesful.

garbage disposal

Milims, Thanks for explaining. I guess our tax is quite similar to your council tax. The council of my town does not charge extra for garbage which has to be picked up, but I know some councils do charge for this. I'm not sure what the amount charged is, but £10 for 3 items seems quite hefty to me....

brave son

I think I would have wetted myself if I would have had to speak to the parliament when I was 15! As a matter of fact I'm not sure how I'd do now that I'm 38 :-) As a matter of curiosity... don't you pay for litter collection at all in the UK? In the Netherlands every household is charged an amount '...

sweet corn

Over here in the Netherlands I also have corn already starting to flower. It's a small variety, so I'm not worried about the fact that they are only 2 ft, but I also noticed the side-shoots. Can't be good news, I think. My book on organic gardening (750+ pp) has extensive info on veg goups and varie...

I'm actually surprised to find that I am the only Dutch person around. I'd expect fellow country(wo)men to have found this great great resource and welcoming community.
And also surprising that several non-Dutch people are speaking a at least a few words of Dutch. That's great!

Hoi

Thanks for the welcome. How come you have some Dutch words, Red?

Yes. In the fifties many Dutch emigrated to NZ and Canada. Mainly farmers. Post-WWII Netherlands wasn't the place to be, I guess.

Greetings from the contintent

Greetings from the Netherlands, to be more specific. I've heard talkabout the great yellow thing in the sky. I can tell you: it's gone missing here too! Lots of water from the sky, though. Anyhow, I'm 38 years old, married, 4 cats, work 3 days a week and am not particularly striving for selfsufficie...
