My Dad said that when he was young they really did have old newspaper cut into squares and stuffed onto a nail in their outside "netty".

I think I'd rather live naked in the wilds then use newspaper....

That was good advice to start with a little patch by your house. In the meantime, try to get hold of some old carpet, either from the dump (mmm, i love the dump) or leftovers from a carpet shop. Put in on the ground you want to clear eventually. It'll kill all the weeds and grass underneath so when ...

Bombay potatoes freeze very very well. Make a batch of it, cool in a tupperware, freeze. To eat: leave out to de-frost and either heat in a microwave with a little water splashed over them or in a frying pan on a low heat. I've a good, easy, Indian recipie if anyone wants.

Coffee in the compost

Hello everyone  Can i put the old filter coffee granules in my compost heap. The coffee maker at work uses one packet a day with makes one jug of coffee. Is that going to be too much? Am I going to give my veggies a coffee high? I don't want to overdose them or have veggies that taste of cof...

This reminds me of my student days. We decided the money spent on toilet paper could be better spent on beer and as our house was half Indian we went with the washing option. Next to the loo each person kept their own small plastic jug. The sink was next to the loo so we could just reach over ...

Moral support please?

Hello everyone, I'm currently batteling with my office mates. I've been told hundrens of times that climate change isn't happening, scientists are doing spin for the government and that no-one cares about the enviroment because we and our kids will be dead in a hundred years, and anyway, we're rich ...

I do put mine in to compost. I'm not sure if this has an impact or not but I tend to either wet it (from the rain butt or urine) or put it in with a layer of squidgy moist stuff such as kitchen waste. I'm kind of assuming that the moisture helps it rot.

Hello from Surrey

Hello everyone, I've been interested in self sufficiancy since I was a kiddie and had a veggie plot. Now I have an allotment and a load of tomatoes at my work. I'm also really interested in the non-growing aspects of selfsuffiancy such as preserving foods, weaving and other textile crafts and am jus...

The old fashioned way of making skeps used blackberry runners as the binding because they're so long. I've heard they can be abit prone to snaping when you pull them though. Apparently you split them before using, though i don't know if you use them green or if you let them dry and then soak them be...
