Re: The haar
First time I heard the word was staying in Fife (East coast) over the winter, the Haar comes in from the cold North Sea (I think it is the warm air from the land hitting the cold air from the sea) I have always lived in the West and you don't get a Haar coming in off the gulf stream in the Atlantic ...

Re: Natural Anti-Inflammatory
Chicken soup, made from real chicken stock (so homemade probably) .... I found a study on it online and can't find it again, there is something in the chicken bones that is anti-inflammatory Chicken soup is sometimes referred to as Jewish Penicillin... and the study I found was looking into whether ...

Re: I have plants I can't eat!
Oh it is definitely a hardy, my mum is a dedicated gardener but has always been a bit lazy (laissez faire might be kinder), and is now quite ill, so things that don't survive would be long gone.... infact I don't think she ever even sows seeds.... she just buys stuff from garden centres all the time...

Re: swollen comb on chicken
Right, hoping now that it calms down and I'l get more sudocrem on it tomorrow, I'm not very worried, and if it had been winter I probably wouldn't have noticed it for a few more days as it isn't that large or obvious that it is anything more than dirt. I don't think it helps that it has been really ...

Re: swollen comb on chicken
Well, I eventually got my internet connection back and was able to do some serious googling, still didn't find much info. We tried to give her comb a clean with salt water just now but she was clearly in pain when we were touching it.... so we couldn't clean any dried-in stuff, it is very dry and cr...

Re: Flowering onions
The bees love alium (onion) flowers and they look lovely too. Only long tounged bees can reach the nectar so it is one of the few types of flower that will guarantee the more prolific short-tounged bees haven't gobbled up before the long tounged bees have a chance. So even if you can't save the seed...

Re: swollen comb on chicken
Nobody? :( I suspect it is pecking, there is definitely blood on it and I think the black bits are dried in blood. I have let her free range today, while the others are in the chook tractor, hoping that will give her a break. What can I wash it with? Is there any household remedy? Or maybe I can was...

swollen comb on chicken
My hens are between 18 months and 2 years old (or there abouts) and one of them seems to have developed a rather nasty looking swollen comb, the comb is also black in places (I assumed it was dirt but a quick google leads me to believe that it might be associated with the swelling) She doesn't seem ...

Re: I have plants I can't eat!
Thanks everyone Bamboo and lemon balm is not a problem.... a substantial amount of the garden is weeds and overgrown grass anyway so having plants I like growing out of control is no problem  I de-potted my mint in the spring for that very reason. The hydrangea might be a problem as we have...

I have plants I can't eat!
I visited my Mother (a dedicated gardener) yesterday she does not grow anything edible, well not on purpose and her garden was looking lovely in full bloom lots of colours and interest. My garden (where I almost only grow edible things)is almost devoid of colour :( I have some sweet peas which look ...

Re: Mole.......aaagh!
After several months of chasing 'moles' around the garden (trying to flood it out, solar deterent, etc) my BIL decided to pay someone to catch the blighters £10 per head.... £10 later IT was gone.... sometimes you are better just getting in a pro.

Re: Potato scab
scab is caused by a fungus I think so I would guess it stays in the soil and so rotating is probably a good idea anyway.
My expert book says to dig in compost but don't lime.
I know it is unsightly but it can be peeled off and the flesh is fine (I know not great for new potatoes but still)
