Cone technique - no dig

Many moons ago (pre-internet) I borrowed a library book that expounded a technique for growing veggies on any ground whatsoever. AIRI it involved no digging at all. Instead it used a metal rod that you bashed into the ground and rotated to make a cone-shaped hole. You filled it with some copyright c...

Re: Composting, Daleks and NPK

tbh years ago I tried all that turning the heap stuff and it seemed to make no difference. the only heat I got/get is from grass clippings... and that is just so much single-ingredient stuff complete with mould/fungus.... I really don't mind it taking 6-12 months to process. I do tip the odd bucket ...

Composting, Daleks and NPK

I have been "composting" for decades and currently use the council's black daleks.. I just tip stuff (almost anything) in the top and dig out "compost" from the bottom every now and then.... it is full of worms and I doubt that it gets the heat production advertised for "pro...

Re: And so it begins ...

It was 20C in the greenhouse today (yes THAT homebrew greenhouse) so I planted a row of pea seeds as an experiment. Also trying bringing in strawberry plants to grow under the grape vines (growing along wires about 1.2 m high)

Re: Indoor camping

Well this year I have pollarded 5 trees and reckon the wood from that would last a third of a winter.. but then that's for secondary heating... triple it for a sole source of heat.. and counting the tree rings, my pollarding is on an 8-year cycle - so thats 5 x 3 x 3 x 8 trees for a continuous flow ...

Re: Indoor camping

DND - wasn't that why they invented coppicing to keep a continuous flow of wood?

Re: rats in the chicken coop

Update... currently on rat 17. These traps are ace. I feel like I am clearing vermin from Lancashire! The buggers are getting smarter though - they have tipped the trap on its side to stop it triggering. I responded with a brick. They have triggered it without getting the food or getting trapped. An...

Re: Rescuing a cobnut / hazelnut tree

I planted 4 hazels about 3 years ago, and they are about 1.5 m high now.... and overgrown with weeds, hops and nettles etc... I'll clear the weeds out in the depths of winter and shape the tree into a hedge-like structure... I tried growing the laterals along canes (tied in), but I've let them lapse...

Re: Redcurrant wine

Final result: a lovely dry rose wine. Sample approved by a friend at work as up there with commercial rose wines.

I think I am going to have to replace some blackcurrant bushes with redcurrants... ISTR that they aren't as easy as blackcurrnats to propagate though - any hints?
