Re: growing sugar

ooh thats interesting, I have a few chard plants coming up that I have sown a few weeks ago, I had no idea they were sugar beet! Are we talking swiss chard, with the brightly coloured stalks?? You've got me going now too! Off to do some googling!

Re: Sweetcorn

As far as pollination is concerned would it possible to pollenate by hand, with a paintbrush, if they are set too close together, this is something my mum does with her tomatoes & seems to work well

Re: Sweetcorn

oooh, I have plenty of seeds left, I suppose it would be worth getting some more on the go in the greenhouse & I could always plant them out at the end of the month if they look healthier than the ones already out there!

Re: What wild foods are about in your neck of the woods

oooh like the idea of using dandelion for coffee, do you just steep it once it's been roasted & ground? I have far too many dandelions (or lion flowers as my 3 year old likes to call them) I'd love to put them to good use. I'd have loved to find some burdock to go with them but I've not been abl...

Re: rhubarb leaves turning red - dying?

how long does the rhubarb season last? My rhubarb came up fine & I got a couple of harvests off it, but now the new stalks that have been coming up are short & weedy looking, wondered if they are lacking or whether it's been all the rain we've had in the last few weeks, or if they've just 'd...

Re: Sweetcorn

mine are looking pathetic anyway, I doubt they'll even get near pollunation stage, we've had far too much rain & not enough sun since I planted them, so it won't really matter how far or close together I've planted them!! Oh well there's always next year I suppose! Anyone got an surefire ...

wow! that's fantastic & it's stunning! now why couldn't someone have got their thinking caps on when it came to building the london olympic stadium??? I was only saying the other day instead of spending hundreds of thousands on the wind farms & using up acres of land, why don't the electrici...

Keeping Bees with young children

I'd love to have a bee hive, we get through quite a bit of honey as my husband has it in his tea & also to counteract hayfever. But we have 2 small, very inquisitive boys, aged 3 & 18 months & I'm not sure how safe it would be to have a hive in the garden. If we tucked it away in a corne...

Hello from sunny sheffield

Hi there, I'm Jo, mum to 2 small boys aged 3 & 18 months. IN a former life, pre children, I used to run a little gardening business & we moved house last year to a small house with a fantastic garden. We inherited a large wooden greenhouse when we moved & so this year I'm having my first...
