Re: Who the hell wants to spend 6 hrs in Coventry?
Could not agree more. Companies like BP promoting themselves as green makes my blood boil. Adverts by BP telling us they are investing in alternatives whilst at the same time being involved in hugely damaging environmental projects is pure hypocracy. Out of interest, who should be investing in gree...

Re: Find a hidden covered and turfed over well
Have a look at your garden on Google Earth. Use the roll-back feature to find an image taken on a dry summer, and look to see if you can make out any parch marks where the turf lies over the cap of the well. Otherwise, if it's been capped you should be able to probe with a metal rod to try and find ...

Re: Help with heavy clay bed
Plant spuds, they will help to break down the clay over the growing season. Then next year, or when you have the time I'd add some of it to your new soil. Clay soil is highly nutritious - you may regret having got rid of it all! Spuds only work because you have to dig them in and then dig them out ...

Re: Foil! What?
some prices here http://www.letsrecycle.com/prices/metals foil is indeed about a third the price of other aluminium scrap... at 25p per kilo can't really see why there is such a difference though. Bear in mind that the price for aluminium foil may be for clean trimmings from producers of aluminium ...

Re: Foil! What?
Aluminium food foil has very limited recycling value due to the contamination (the food stuck to it) - which can't easily be cleaned. It's one of those materials where the responsibility is on the consumer to Reduce rather than the council to Recycle. And leaves you wondering what happens to it wit...

Re: A cut too far?
The centres of large towns have suffered because planners decided several decades ago to remove the residential homes/flats and create a retail monoculture. Residents have to be put back into town centres to create the communities that will support vibrant businesses and create the retail/leisure de...

Well.. you look like you want to thump someone with that shovel in your avatar, and you're hiding behind a helmet and standing in what appears to be a crater. Not the most welcoming choice of avatar I've seen on any forum. (and yes, I do prejudge people by the image they choose to present themselves...

Ask the insurers to pay for soil analysis for the area the fire-fighting runoff drained to.
Hopefully the certificate from the insurers includes the line, "hydrocarbons - n/d", but the one for the fire-fighting run-off will have to analyses for a few other substances as well.

I'm guessing that not only are handouts being sought, but a considerable tuition fee debt is being worked up. Are they really conscious of their financial situation?

Re: What i'm brewing at the moment
Racked the elderberry 2-step this morning.. filled five demijohns from the bulk FV (ok, the fifth will need just a splash of grape juice to come up to full - and I didn't sample that much). Still some sweetness and a gentle fizz from dissolved the CO2 but very pleasant. Hopefully racking will give t...

Re: Building a wood store - new stove, suggestions ?
This is our first year with our new woodburner, it's much bigger than the one we had at the last house a few years ago. We're also using it as secondary heat but run it in preference to turning the heating up (every evening, most of the day at weekends, most of the day if either of us is working fro...

Re: Building a wood store - new stove, suggestions ?
At the risk of sounding patronising, a cubic meter bag of wood will need almost a cubic meter of storage room - not quite a full cubic meter because you'll be able to stack it neater than it was thrown into a bag. If it's 3' high and about 6'6" long, then it will come forward about 18" - a...

There are several, the BPF has a list of their members that recycle - link They're generally interested in lorry loads volumes as there isn't a lot of margin in melt recycling plastic and haulage eats a huge chunk ...
