Re: Leaving blackcurrants on the bush

I try to avoid sugar too - bit of an issue because I LOVE rhubarb! Slightly off topic but have you tried rhubarb with strawberries? I was introduced to it a couple of years ago and it's a wonderful combination. Ripe strawberries are sweet enough to make the rhubarb edible without extra sugar. Cheer...

Re: Plan a Veg Patch

Hi Having done the same thing last year, here are the mistakes I made. 1 - don't put the fruit bushes too near the tree as the tree will give cover to birds who can fly down and eat your berries. Also, are you sure about having the chickens so close to where wild birds will be sitting in the tree? I...

Food allergies and intolerances

Hi I spent most of Sunday at the Allergy and Free From show and picked up some tips that I found interesting so I thought I'd share. There have been huge improvements in the understanding of allergies over the last few years, which is just as well as there's been a huge increase in the number of peo...

Re: Someone say something

Sorry, I'm one of the offenders. I haven't been around for months. I used to be on the forum at least once a day, I would almost go so fr as to say I was addicted. If I couldn't log on, I got withdrawal symptoms wondering how everyone was getting on. Then last year I extended my garden by buying som...

Re: I'm Back Too - and I have LAND!!!

Congratulations, how fabulous. I do hope everything goes smoothly and you can get in quickly. Is the land all nice and neatly ploughed and ready just to be planted?

Re: Not buying new

Hi Flo, Sorry I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Are you saying that it's a bad thing to donate unwanted goods to charity or sell them secondhand? What should we do with them? If you're saying that we must keep everything until it wears out (apart from unwanted gifts) what happens if our ...

Re: Chickens in the trees...

Lol. I think different breeds have different jumping/flying abilities. I had a white (something, can't remember) bantam that flew up on my roof the moment the run door was opened but the Pekins would have to walk around a matchstick.

Re: Good Easter weekend everyone?

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend. I too did housework and indoor chores on Friday. Saturday was a trip to the seaside with my mum but on Sunday and Monday, I spent all day in the garden :-)

Cheers

Re: Planning for being self sufficientish in 2015

My jeans always wear through between the thighs and I can't bring myself to throw them out because the rest is fine. My plan is to combine several pairs of old jeans into one (or more, if successful) pair of patchwork jeans. I was looking at a pair of jeans in exactly the same way earlier. Do let m...

Re: 101 uses for little bits of string

In the shop we use little bits of string like that for bundling up invoices etc, and also clothes hangers... (yes, it's that kind of shop where lots of miculs lie about - love that word, why have I never come across it before?) Lol - cos I made it up. I used it first on this forum a few years ago. ...

Re: 101 uses for little bits of string

Wow those are impressive! My Mum who passed away last year, did a lot of knitting. She always had a lot of off cuts which she would put out regularly for the birds to take,to build their nest lol.Might be worth a shot since we're heading into spring? :dontknow: Great idea. I also put out cat fur for ...

101 uses for little bits of string

I can't believe we haven't had this one... Each week I get a box of organic wonderfulness from Abel & Cole that is tied up with two short pieces of string (about 18 inches long). Of course being the horder that I am, I can't possibly throw them away so they get stored along with all the other mi...

Re: Planning for being self sufficientish in 2015

I'm really excited, I'm buying an extra plot of land from next door. An allotment would have been a lot cheaper but there's more chance of my tending it if it's just outside the back door. I've also found someone nearby who helps out with the garden in exchange for a share of the produce :-) Looking...
