Re: What do you grow that perhaps you shouldn't?

MMM sit in your flowerbed and breath deeply. It wasn't meant as a total condemnation of all things inedible , as I said it was a tongue in cheek question and for the most part I'd say the majority of the gardens in the country are filled with flowers and grass rather than taters and cabbages but eac...

Re: Thinking of changing to wood burning heating system

We have been considering a wood burning oven rather than a whole heating system and found this on e-bay. It seems quite cheap really , does anyone have any experience of this type?

Re: Doomsday preppers

Riff raff , as an aside I've taken part as a zombie in a "zombie battle" and a good laugh it was too, as long as it's not looked at in any depth. Goodness knows what a social worker would have thought about a 10 year old standing above my prone body hitting it with a plastic sword and screaming "Die...

Doomsday preppers

This programme has been showing on National Geographic over here recently and I recorded the series and am slowly working my way through them. It's an American series and features all Americans so presumbly it's already been shown over there although there has been a one off set in the UK. I reckoned...

What do you grow that perhaps you shouldn't?

Just to be clear I don't mean any waccy baccy plantations that anyone may have but rather plants (or whatever) that seem at odds with the selfsufficientish idea. I'm talking about plants that don't provide food or have any real purpose and is something that came to me today whilist digging out some ...

Yes that could be the stuff. It was a composite of several layers and was fitted to the rafters below the tiles.

Re: Tips to keep your extremeties warm in winter

Working on a freezing cold building site I made some insoles out of a foil/plastic insulation which did the job of keeping the cold at bay. However, I can't for the life of me remember the trade name not that you'd want to buy a whole roll just for your two boots.

Re: Fancy a house in China with good transport links?

To be honest if it were me I'd have moved but without getting too political about it I applaude the system over there. I can't help but compare it with a recent programme on the tv all about housing in Britian which showed an elderly woman being forced out of her house so it and the surrounding hous...

Re: Food in England BBC tv

Yes ,probably a generation thing. My mother (born in the 1930's ) always overboiled veg. I've seen carrots done for up to half an hour.

Re: Food in England BBC tv

I've not seen all the programmes in this food season but the ones I have caught have been entertaining. The one about the sweets brought back several memories even though we don't eat many and Clarissa Dicken's denounceation of Mrs Beaton as a force of almost evil in British cookery was funny to wat...

Re: 19th November - International Men's Day

Probably just another attempt at growth by the greetings card industry. . I'm not going to knock that industry as the other half buys pallet loads and resells them at a profit but here's a little story. On one valetines day my wife showed me a box in the garage and said that if I wanted to g...

Re: Homemade dubbin type thingy

There was a old "trick" used by soldiers in the past and that was to fill the boots with urine and let them soak for a few days to protect the leather (I wouldn't try this on plastic mind). Completely vegatarian but up to you if you want to try it out.Evidently goat urine is said to be better than h...

Re: Using old sterilising powder

If it's the sterilising powder that I think it is then it's sodium metabisulphate (or is that sulphide?) , anyway try mixing some up and you should be able to smell the pungent whiff of sodium dioxide which is what it decomposes into. It'll probably still be ok to use but at a guess it may have lost...

Re: Bubblewrap - only one so far ....

Just thought, does anyone remember the episode of Red Dwarf where someone takes a small sheet of bubblewrap, paints it red with the words "tension sheet" on it and sells it as a stress reliever and in the process becomes exceedingly rich?
