Re: What interesting or unusual edible plants have you grown

I've said before that I'm a re-enactor and because orange carrots are not really authentic for the middle ages ( yeah I know picky picky ) I've tried growing white carrots several times but never with any success, I've experienced very poor rates of germination and very stunted growth of the ones th...

Re: Foraging Phone App [brainstorming]

The app I have in mind wouldn't include reference material... it would just be a tool for archiving specimens found while out foraging. You could take photos, enter notes, tag the location, etc. All that information would go into an archive that you could later browse or search. To be honest then I...

Re: Powdered concrete for lime. Yeay or nay?

I'd say not really either and would agree it would most likey be almost completely inert , however would add that if you or anyone did choose to use it to be careful handling it and werar a mask at the very least. Powdered concrete is likey to contain very small pieces of quartz which can cause all ...

the little green cafe

I don't know how widespread this is but the little green cafe is said to be a sister site to freecycle and being a member of a couple of freecycle groups I recieved an e-mail about the cafe. It said in the email that it was for things that are generally unsuitable for the main group boards such as "...

Re: Foraging Phone App [brainstorming]

I don't use apps or even have a phone that can take them but I could see a small potential for such a thing. I shouldn't think you will be able to retire on the profits from it but at least you'll be able to say you've done more good than all those dancing elf type of apps . As to what features then...

Re: Politics and religion........

Politics and to a lesser degree invade all our lives at one point or another. However, I find that most political arguments tend to go round in circles. I post on a building forum (this place is much better by comparission, for example the majority there seem to be in favour of covering the country ...

Re: Anything but Turkey !!

I actually quite like turkey and that's good because a friend of mine drops one off every year that he is given at work. He and his family go out for dinner on christmas day and so don't want the bird. The one this year was about 5kgs and it got the usual treatment of some bacon on top and an onion ...

Wood smoking.

I've seen that some people on here smoke their own food and have built their own smokers. This is something I've thought about for a while now but like so many things haven't quite got round to it. I understand the principals and to begin with I am just going to aim at smoking for taste rather than ...

Re: How much?

Well there hasn't been a doomsday date that has actually been anything like correct so I won't be holding my breath in 2016. I've recently discovered that the 25 year cans evidently use some sort of nitrogen replacement technogology which replace 98% of the oxegen so the food doesn't degrade in a vi...

Re: F-f-f-facebook

Little story about two friends. One is similiar to me in that he has a facebook account "because it seems everyone else has one and it's what you should do  " My other friend is a little more technically savvy and sent my first friend a "friend request " via the facebook to which he got no ...

Re: F-f-f-facebook

I've got a facebook account but that's pretty much where my knowledge of it ends. I very rarely use it. I did manage to "like" selfsufficientish on there but don't actually know what that really means. To be honest I don't really like facebook at all, I find the whole layout a mess , it's a bit like...

Re: Let’s have a list of New years resolutions & !revolution

I am giving up the plonk in January for Cancer Research UK's 'Dryathlon'. That should save about 80 wine bottles from needing recycling. I know the Scots have a reputation for drinking but are you saying that you get through 80 bottles of wine a month? I'll confess I hadn't heard of this "D...

Re: What would you do if you had access to a free plug socke

I suppose the obvious answer would be to have an electric car which would seem to solve the problem of moving batteries etc. but there would be a considerable outlay so probably not worth it. I'd simply move a freezer over there, less to move about , no expensive batteries and if the basement alread...
