Re: What do you think is a reasonable rent for a 1 acre field?

Please excuse shamelessly gratuitous new thread celebrating the news, but we managed to negotiate £50 for half an acre. To us, that is reasonable (as it has running water and electric fence) and we spend double that with Riverford anyway. And if we can grow enough veg, she is even prepared to reduce...

Yippee! Cowabunga! Jurassic Park! My Ishness is complete!

Am chuffed to bits, just had to share...we have struck a deal with our LL to rent half of her HUMUNGOUS field, which is at the back of our garden. :flower: :thumbright: :sunny: SOOOOO pleased, have been on allotment waiting list for yonks with no joy, have tiny back garden (which I erm...

Re: Catfood

Thanks for these we went for Applaws in the end, but they don't do kitten stuff, so she will have to wait until she is bigger for those (a cousin is a vet and said it does make a difference - I was always skeptical). Hand't thought of begging scraps though Julie, will try that but again not for a wh...

Re: What do you think is a reasonable rent for a 1 acre field?

Thanks guys, that gives me an idea. I hear what you say about having it for free, but I think that is pushing it a bit, as I know she is struggling financially, and could have horses on it if she wasn't letting it to us. Also, I would feel a bit restricted if it was a favour, and wouldn't want to pu...

What do you think is a reasonable rent for a 1 acre field?

I am planning on asking our landlady if we can rent her field (one of about 20 of hers - she lives next door) which is behind her house. Which would be a dream come true! :flower: We are not sure what to offer her - she has been good to us in letting us graze our chooks on it since we moved here in ...

Re: Snow shovelling—the Stonehead way

Holey Moley!! *is there a smiley for cringing with shame* to think I didn't go to work today because we had three inches down here in Wiltshire! However, the starry sky and hills in the picture look stunning...not that you were stopping to admire the view that night I am sure! Hope it stops snowing ...

Re: Gardening books.

Ah...I thought for a minute that nobody was going to mention the 'Expert' books! I grew up with these, when everyone else was reading 'Just Seventeen' or 'Smash Hits' on the school bus back in 1993, I was there with 'The Vegetable Expert'! They are very clear and although basic, good for quick refer...

Re: Help me find something frivolous!

Something that will be used in the garden in may - like weaving an obelisk out of willow for sweet peas...or something you can plant strawberries in (I think you can stack flowerpots (of reducing sizes) to do this and plant the strawbs in the gaps, if you are limited for space.

Re: help needed 'buying' a wedding gift

Perhaps a bit late crowsashes, but I love this website for unusual presents: http://www.steptoesantiques.co.uk In fact, I am thinking of doing something similar myself, as I am addicted to antiques auctions. I know 'antiques' sounds expensive, but there are some cheaper and some expensive ones and s...

Re: Favourite essential oil

These all sound great! I am inspired. But please can you just clarify: Where is the best place to get these oils? Only having been to the Body Shop once, I did find they were very expensive; and How do you use them in washing? do you put them in the machine? Instead of conditioner? Thanks, this is a...

Re: Cabin Fever

Tell me about it. I am in the process of turning grass in my new garden into veg beds. I thought the frost would make it easier to turn sods of earth over (to kill the grass) but I can't even get a spade in the earth! And to have all that time off too, and nothing productive to do with it!

Re: Improving your Ish in 2010

Oooh I love new years' resolutions too! 1. Not set foot in a supermarket. For various reasons (I won't start a rant here!) I am certain that the supermarkets are to blame for most of the worlds' evils and am determined not to spend a single penny with them. 2. Pay off my (rather considerable) debt. ...

Re: bulb fennel problems

I am glad I am not the only one Russ - mine just grew an enourmous long shoot and keeled over.

But then there was an extraordinary dry spell this year...I will try again next year and make sure I keep it well watered.

Catfood

Can anyone recommend an alternative to the grim, minced battery hen/cow brain catfood sold in the supermarkets? I have already decided that I am going to use tins (those sachets are so wasteful and can't be recycled) but am not entirely comfortable about using Whiskas or Felix etc. Any ideas? Am soo...

WOW - I love it!

How long have you been embroidering? Is this something that most people could do, or does it use advanced techniques?

It's lovely.
