Re: Wind turbines on your door step?

We’ve just learned the farmer across the road has applied for planning permission for two wind turbines. What we find irritating is the double standards and finessing of the system to advantage some applicants, but not others. When we bought the croft, we considered putting a 6kW wind turbine in on ...

Re: Making a virtue out of a necessity..?

So, if you've got this far,..... town vs. rural what's the relative Carbon-Footprint situation? (Genuine question,I'm unsure). Diabolical if you have children. We have only one car, I walk/bike as much as possible and the Other Half car shares. But the nearest town with a swimming pool (we want bot...

Re: Help - Me pigs are having a punch up

Certain combinations of ours sows used to do this. Put the wrong two together and they’d bash it out for days trying to establish who was top pig. Put one of the real boss ladies in and the fighting pair would promptly behave. If left alone, they’d eventually wear each other out. After a week or so…...

Torygraph & Citigroup start to wake-up to peak oil

I was quite surprised when Stumbleupon found this in the Torygraph:

Eighteen years more Saudi oil according to them. And then what?

Re: How old are you and how should you feel ???

I dontwant to wind anyone up ,or offend, but If you've worked in a pit,a foundry,or,dare I say it,on a hill farm, for 40 or 50 years (and not just downsized after years sitting on your arse) you may not feel invigourated and full of the joys of life, but just broken. Your body can only do so much. Goo...

Re: How old are you and how should you feel ???

Late 40s and still running at least 12 miles a week, circuit training four mornings a week, weight training twice a week, and doing four hours of rugby drills a week. Oh, and working the croft, usually with hand tools and muscle power. And keeping two boys active and entertained. And walking/cycling...

Re: Culling our pigs

[quote="Green Aura"Maybe I'm being unfair, raising pigs isn't Stoney's sole source of income. I suppose his prices would be have to be higher if it were. [/quote] Actually, pigs and pork were the sole source of income that provided enough to feed us, cover their running costs and generate ...

Re: Culling our pigs

One of our cockerels killed at 30 weeks will have eaten £7.60 in feed by that point. Then there are the costs of housing, fencing, feed troughs, medications, buckets, steel feed bins (the inspectors who check the feeding regime are very keen on steel bins), farm insurance, building maintenance and s...

Re: Culling our pigs

I am sorry, the majority of the population seem to want everything cheap and fast... and flavourless! It frustrates me because I love real food (you know that stuff with actual flavour like it was when gran was young) but find it damn near impossible to get... yes cost is always going to be a facto...

Re: Culling our pigs

you deserve a bit a rest and hopefully this will give you the time to devote to something new and equally or more rewarding. Definitely. I took the boys on a six-mile trek over forestry trails today, including some steep hills. We did it in 61 minutes, 26 seconds. They were on mountain bikes. I ran...

Re: Culling our pigs

We ordered our pig from a local farmer in France several months in advance, the pig was to be suitably fattened up, only to find on the arranged date for killing that she had her first period. We were told that you couldn't kill her at this time (is this correct or just a superstition?) so we had t...

Culling our pigs

We’ve decided to cull our herd of Berkshire pigs , which I’ve mentioned on here a few times over the years. While we have more potential customers than ever, the overwhelming majority now expect prices well below the cost of the production and that’s not sustainable. On top of that, many people expe...
