Re: Growing your own barley

I assume you mean do I have a seed merchant? Nope, I don't. I have just read though that the barley you buy as sprouting grain is UK two row barley and at £7 for 5kg that's more than enough. So, I'm thinking that'll do!

Growing your own barley

I'm thinking of growing my own barley this season, then malting it and turning it into beer! Anyone grown barley, finding it even difficult to find seed that isn't just for farmers.

Re: Beer from hops

As minnesota says one plant is enough, it was plenty on my allotment. but yep took 2 years. Where do you live? Up in Scotland and further north in Ireland would be too far north really, there is a reason most hops are still grown in kent/

Now I'm wondering if Minnesota will send me some Rhizomes too!

Actually, I quite liked ever decreasing circles. Anyone remember that? He was a great actor and I've heard a nice chap too. A real shame.

Re: Using old sterilising powder

I've been introduced to Starsan, which I now use instead of VWP unless I really need to nuke something. You just spray it on, no need to rinse so it makes the whole steralizing time much shorter. I'm not sure I'd risk using old solution like that, I'm with George, for the sake of a few quid it not w...

No mention of the homebrew club I'm in either, although she did mention the other two I told her about!

Anyway, nice article none the less and she was very nice too.

Bristol is a great place to forage in, just get a map and head for the nearest greenspace. You might too want to check out windmill hill city farms fruitfulnes project.

Re: blackberry vodka

Many recipes are meant as a guide, I know when I write them its with the hope that people adapt them. Older recipes certainly have too much sugar in them you'd think they were sponsered by tate and lyle or something.

Quite agree with the above if it tastes nice now why wait?

Re: Pine needles..

Andy.. I made the cordial as per your recipe, is it supposed to smell odd/unusual? I haven't plucked up courage to try it yet but there's a pint sat in the fridge.. Odd/Unusual is rather subjective, so I'm not sure. It's supposed to smell like pine. Could be that its somehow got infected with some ...

You could try putting it into a secondary before bottling it, ie - in a demijohn for a week or so then bottling it.
