Seed potatoes chitting too Early!

Post: # 186602Post Harasimow »

Opened up my box of first earlies to discover they have started to "chit" sending out white sprouts. So I put them all in egg boxes on my windowsill.

Then I looked at my other seed taters to discover they are doing the same! I dont want to plant my maincrop untill May/June. But I've put them in the greenhouse as I imagine chitting early is better than letting them grow long white shoots?

How do you save your seed potatoes so they dont start chitting untill your ready for them?

Mine are in a cool room on a sunny windowsill - I think if you have them in a warm room they will chit too soon. I'm not sure what you do about the ones that have already put out long white shoots.

Yes, if you remove the long white shoots you will get another flush of shoots in about a month.
I have to do that several times with my stored eating spuds from January onwards, rub off all the shoots but they still keep coming back.
