Newbie help!! What should I be planting now?

I am quite new to this (although I have grown bits of veg from time to time all my life). What sort of things should I be doing or planting now for the winter?

I am mostly doing container gardening at the moment.

You can plant some winter lettuces such as lambs lettuce, some winter cabbage, and at the end of September you can plant some onion sets.

If you have empty beds it's a good idea to sow 'green manure' such as grazing rye or
Phacelia in order to stop soil nutrients being washed away over the winter & improve fertility.

You should just have time to grow new pototoes for Christmas.

Chinese greens if you want good edibles thru the winter...all winter! As a side note explore this site they are AMAZING, very helpful and will teach you how to harvest seed from what you sow. A lot of what you'll find here are heirloom varieties so pass them around.

I get a monthly email from [url]http://www.gardenate.com[\url] which tells me what to plant and sow each month. You can sign up on their website for the email or just check their website when you want to see what to plant.

I subscribe to the Sutton's Garden Planner, which cost's 15 pounds a year, but as I do not any read other magazines, it is to my mind money well spent. You can give it a trial run for a month and spend a few hours pottering about in your Garden whilst sitting in your armchair. But seriously, if you spend the time and have a good look at this programme it is well worth the money. Included in this plan is monthly a email garden reminder of what to plant, when to plant, where to plant,ie succession planting. So in my book it add's pleasure to Gardening.
