What are you havesting

Post: # 226777Post bonniethomas06 »

I ordered a veg box lately because I was a bit miserable about what was coming out of the garden. But actually, it isn't that bad:

parsnips
salsify
spring greens
kale
purple sprouting (just recently)
swiss chard
perpetual spinach
forced rhubarb
lambs lettuce
mustard leaves

Pots still in storage, but we are down to the tiny ones now!

What about you?

PSB

I have just harvested the last of the parsnips and they are in the freezer.

Loads of leeks and salsify but I don't like the latter so just leaving it to flower.

Still some purple curly kale.

Have lettuce (2 varieties) coming on nicely, I sowed them in the autumn and they have survived over winter.

Ditto rocket which is starting to flower now.

Dill survived winter and so did tons of coriander.

Lots of edible weeds in amongst all that mess too!

Have just cooked all the remaining butternuts to puree as well and they are now in the freezer.

Have tons of last year's food still in freezer so I'm still eating raspberries and blackcurrants etc.

Oh and in the wild bits there's loads of edible salad type leaves e.g. celandine and jack by the hedge etc. Not short of salad stuff here - it just requires a bit of time to find and pick it!

I am glad I am not the only person who doesn't like salsify. Well that is not true, I do like it, but by the time I have peeled it, I am left with a white root the size of a pipecleaner, it is never worth the effort!

I agree, plus they blacken as you peel them so need to go in some lemony water. I didn't think the taste was that great so couldn't be bothered to dig up and eat the rest. And whilst I don't mind giant forked parsnips a forked salsify leaves you with not much left to eat.

You should all be very pleased. I've got some rocket on the go, a lot of it got scorched unfortunately so don't have many survivors. It's just so expensive to buy from shops.

Not much at the moment, most definitely in the "hungry gap" period.
Having said that, I do have the last of the spring cabbages with the summer cabbages just starting.
Also, new potatoes, new carrots, peas, strawberries and of course ... tomatoes.

Plus I do have a courgette flower ... female but no flippin male flowers. :(

Kale and mustard greens. We've got some self-set broad beans in the polytunnel which should be pickable by the weekend (I'm going to try cooking the small whole pod as suggested elsewhere on Ish).

MInt!

I made about 16lb of mint sauce yesterday!

Daft you may say? Well not really as I love crab apple and mint Jelly, but when the Crab apples are ready the mint is not at it's best going to flower and full of fly spit. The mint was in the Raspberry bed too, so it was weeding as well!

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.
