What types of pumpkin and squash did you grow this year?

What was the result of your complaint to the seed company, Odsox?

I got a replacement packet of seeds which produced the ones I grew this year.
To be fair, it was the same batch of seeds so this year's could be OK ... just some unexpected cross pollination in 2009.

Disaster this year, grew an Italian butternut, non F1, was absolutely useless, 10 plants produced 1 half sized fruit. Our Uchiki Kuri from saved seed didn't do much better and the fruit, although looking the part, so far have been tasteless. So looks like I'll have to buy some new seed next year.

I also like Crown Prince pumpkins but they are an F1 so have to buy seed each year.

Invincible is very like Crown Prince and tastes very good also. My favourite for flavour is an Italian pumpkin called Marina Di Chioggia - it tastes quite like Crown Prince but even sweeter with a creamier texture.

Most of my squashes were a bit rubbish this year. I grew a generic potimarron, Rouge vif, big boy, jack-be-little, Turks Turban and butternut squash and most just produced a few fruits. The potimarrons were a bit more prolific and they are absolutely delicious. We had one roasted as a side dish with our dinner last night and it just tasted of summer sunshine.

Just right for dismal midwinter's day.

Wish you lived closer to me Mrs M, as I got about 66 Jack be Littles from just 2 plants and would have got more if I hadn't had to keep slashing it back so I could actually get along the paths! Do you have a field or something cos that many squash/pumpkins take up a lot of space!

Yes mmm, plenty of space here. Planted in a couple of raised beds and just let them ramble off across the field.

I always grow Potimarrons - totally my fav squash. Got quite a few butternuts this year, first time ever Managed to grow 3 very large pumpkins which friend used for carving and soup for Halloween. Tried 1 myself but didnt like it - tasted of nothing.
Have tried several other varieties of squash in the past (crown prince being one) but find them all bland and watery.

What are the Jack Be Littles like?

M3 - all my squashes go mouldy very quickly, I certainly cant save them for the following year

Only had one Jack Be Little so far, roasted - think that is the only way to cook them because they are impossible to peel. It was sweeter than potimarron but pleasant. Won't do them again because a potimarron is far more versatile because it easier to prepare. I've got one going off at the moment so need to do something with it.

I haven't grown Jack be littles, but I sometimes buy them to use as fancy appetizers. Cut the top off, scrape the seeds out, fill with soup fixings, set the top back on and bake. If you coat the skin in butter first the skin gets tender enough to eat, but it loses integrity so be sure to bake it in a muffin cup or something in case it springs a leak.

I don't think you can beat butternut squash for flavour. I just use the seeds from the year before.
