Wilted cucumber plant
We had a lovely, large, healthy looking cucumber plant growing in a pot. Have left it outside on sunny days and bring it in at night to protect it from the wind and rain. The other morning it had completely wilted and now looks terminally ill! No signs of disease, bugs and has not been over or under watered. Is this something that others have experienced...any suggestions? We are very near the sea and wondered if salt had affected it when it was in the garden. First time we have grown cucumbers and OH is taking it personally and is now in mourning! Have time to buy another plant but is it worth it?

Re: Wilted cucumber plant
Is it a frame or ridge cucumber ?
Frame cucumbers are the ones that grow in greenhouses and have fruit like the ones you buy, or maybe miniature versions of the ones you buy. Ridge cucumbers are outdoor ones and have stumpier spiny fruit.
The reason I ask is Frame ones are quite susceptible to foot rot, if you pull the soil away from the stem you might find that it is rotten just below soil level.
Ridge ones are tough as old boots and frame ones need coddling.

Apparently its a miniture version and, despite coddling does seem to be rotten below the surface. Thanks Odsox, know which one to get next year or even this year if Dave can get over the grief! He never looks after plants as much as he has this one

Ridge cu's have come on a bundle in the last few years. The best new F1 ridge are at least as good as greenhouse type(though obviously shorter),personally I wouldn't waste space on the indoor stuff. Now,I know it's about a month late, but if you can't find any ridge plants for sale(car boot most likely)then I would start some F1 seed indoors now,and if you can cover them with something against early frost in Oct.......well I'D have a bash at them anyhow! BWs.

I agree.
You seem to have got to the source of the problem bb but another one is they don't like draughts! We lost ours two years on the trot in the polytunnel because of this. We've got one which seems to be more successful this year, at least it has several baby cucumbers which we didn't get as far as before. Fingers crossed!

Remember that cucumbers have more ways of dying than you can imagine - cure one and they will spring another on you.
