One day I'll get it right

Post: # 287369Post Odsox »

Successional vegetables that is.
My PSB and spring cabbage finished a good couple of months ago and since then we have been eating bottled, dried and frozen veg, which of course is what they're for.
I've been looking at the growing fresh veg and willing them to get a move on, and, well, I think they ALL took the hint.

Last week, no fresh veg.
This week we have courgettes, broad beans, mangetout peas, French beans, 3 fairly enormous Calabrese broccoli, turnips and carrots.
Plus salad stuff of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, but they don't count.

Ah well, better not complain too much.

We usually have some kale knocking about for the hungry gap, sprouted seeds + sauerkraut. We don't seem to be able to grow enough of anything here to do much in the way of preserving, other than the kraut.

This spell of good weather has brought everything on a treat though, hasn't it. We've now got salad leaves and a few green chillies to go at.

Yep, kale here, too. Some of my spinach overwintered - I'm just finishing that off today. And radishes, and salad leaves (started off in a pot indoors). But then there will be a gap; although we had no rain, and even a bit of sunshine, it's back to cold now, and nothing is growing. :(

My PSB has only just finished, but I do have some other sprouting thing which I got at a seed swap as a traditional Irish cabbage but it isn't, but it is the most delicious sprouting something or other. I did offer OS some of my perennial Daubenton's kale, but he refused it calling it famine food and cattle food

And I was right
Oh I forgot, I've also got a fairly large supposedly edible chrysanthemum with very pretty yellow flowers.
Any idea what I should do with it ?

Well that's where the seed came from.
Sow that, she said, and then gave no instructions about what to do with it when it's about 2 foot tall and flowering like mad.

Haven't you even tasted them yet? They're delicious. We got some plain yellow flowers and some two-tone. They were very pretty but didn't go to seed - we waited for ages. Then some pillock sent the remaining seeds over the briny to Ireland. We must get some more.

I must confess I did have a bit of a nibble on a leaf early on, and it tasted just like chrysanthemums smell.
I did sort of wonder if it was a plot to do away with me for consistently going off topic on every thread, a sort of "edible hemlock".
I'll try it again, although I should point out I don't really do salad leaves, my salads are based on fully hearted Little Gem.

Don't be daft. We'd have to take on all the admin!

I love mixed salad leaves. We buy the mixed leaves seed packets and then add in any other bits we have knocking about like chard, beetroot, radish etc. The chrysanths we grew separately as we didn't know what they tasted like but I'm thinking they'll probably go in the same mix if they're not going to seed here.
