Potato time

Post: # 287781Post Odsox »

It's that time of year again, but I've already used that heading for sowing tomatoes.

Time to dig up my Mayan Gold potatoes, a beautiful sunny day meant they were dug up, dried out and bagged up in a couple of hours. Quite impressed with these Mayan Gold, especially for yield, planted 2 Kg of seed and dug up 46 Kg.
As a potato they are a bit strange, you can't boil them ... at all. But baked they are heavenly, dry and very creamy. They are supposed to be wonderful roast, chipped or sauteed, but they need ageing a bit before that. Come September I'll try that and let you know.
On the negative side they are slug magnets, lots of holes with a resident slug at the bottom, and the plants are huge with growth at least 3 feet tall, which I didn't realise until afterwards when I ended up with a potato jungle.

I suppose that means it's autumn now. :(

Well, temperatures here are definitely autumnal, too...

I have "surprise" potatoes again this year. Haven't actually been growing any for years, but they keep coming up in my turned-over compost, so no idea what variety they might be.

I haven't even looked at my outside potatoes yet, I have Maya Gold here as well, I didn't know about baking them, I made mine into fried last year and they were lush

We had some tonight done in the oven, Dauphinoise style with just milk and garlic. Gorgeous.

Now the wind has died down I might venture over to the spud bed. All self sets from last year, so I've no idea what they'll be.
