Wow - our old ladies were a bit past that. They were hybrid barred plymouth rock / rhode island red, lay like gattling guns for the first couple of years but still a good heavy free range bird. Next time we're going to buy some Light Sussex if we can get them, but the pesky Avian Flu protection zone ends half a mile down the road so sourcing new birds may be fun. Oh well!
