Another newbie!

Hello all

I have been lurking on this site for well over a year now and decided I really should say helloooo!

I live in Gloucestershire with my partner, my 13yr old son and nearly 2yr old daughter. I have had an allotment now for just under a year. We managed potatoes, peas, runner beans, broad beans, pumpkins, cabbage, sweetcorn, carrots, beetroot, manky onions and brown cauliflowers this year Anyway this year I need to be a lot more organised. My partner is very likely to be diagnosed with Coeliacs disease (and possibly my 2yr old too) so I need to make the most of my allotment as our food budget is going to have to a lot higher this coming year

I would love to keep chickens on the allotment (which is allowed) but I worry that something will happen to them. My back garden is small so I don't know if would be a good idea to have them at home.

Apart from that I would love to start making homemade wine and I have just been reading the guide to hopefully get started.

Anyway just wanted to say hello everyone, hope you all had a fab Christmas.

I can thoroughly recommend keeping chickens. Are you afraid of foxes getting them or vandals of the human variety? A good sturdy run will give them lots of protection. I've got one made from an old security cage from a warehouse that was closing down. It's a metal mesh, too strong for foxes or casual vandals to get into. I've seen the same sort of panels second hand in reclamation yards.

Yeh it's the fox/vandals stopping me from having chickens at the mo I'm such a worrier I will have to go and visit our local reclamation place and see what I can find for a run. My OH has already built me a chicken house, bless him.

I'll keep thinking about it.

P.S It's one of those days today, I intended to go to the allotment and get a lot done. The weather here is awful though, I hate that!

Hi there and welcome I'd second the chicken thing - not only do they give fantastic eggs but they are a real pleasure to have. Your kids will love them and like growing your own veg you know what's gone into what you are eating - a big concern when your loved ones health is a concern
