Exactly how does that make them easier to eat?"These square melons will make it easier than ever to eat because they can be served in long strips rather than in the crescent shape."
This is an old idea. I can remember stores selling cubic tomatoes one summer in the 70s, then Blue Peter showed you how to make them at home. Cubic boiled eggs too, using one of these.

Yes, and straight bananas - now that's a must-have! How could nature ever expect us to eat anything as irregular as a curvy banana???
And potatoes - think of all the waste once you've cut them into proper chip shapes! Terrible, terrible...

You weren't wrong - but what's natural, can't be good. It just HAS to be plastic.
I have the same problem with "ready to eat" apples - slices and wrapped in plastic. Probably treated with some nasty stuff to keep it white, too. In my opinion, apples are always ready to eat - well, provided they are ripe, and didn't fall onto the muckheap on their way down from the tree...

These two are both to prevent the fruit interacting with the atmosphere. Apples are packed in nitrogen so they don't discolour when cut or bruised. Bananas release ethylene dioxide gas which hastens ripening and decay in other fruits.
Of course, just getting the stuff to the shop quickly as possible doesn't enter into it!
