One way to reuse polystyrene

These are some bits I made out of blocks and sheets of polystyrene. Water bowls and climbing blocks for snakes probably aren't applicable to many of you but the same technique can be used to make vases, decorative flower pots, wall art, keep the children busy and other things you might think of in the middle of the night.

Step 1. Model sheets and blocks into the desired shape using toothpicks or glue to hold them together and a knife or your fingers to shape them. Don't worry about going into fine detail as that would be lost in the next step.

Step 2. Coat in 2 layers of grout, waiting for the first layer to thoroughly dry before applying the second.

Step 3. If you want a smoother finish give it a light sanding with some sandpaper.

Step 4. Paint! Now you can go into detail.

Step 5. Varnish to help prevent chipping/make cleaning easier/make it waterproof. (When using varnish make sure that all the polystyrene has been covered with grout otherwise the varnish will eat a huge hole into the polystyrene.)

(Mods I hope it's ok to post these links to the pictures, I haven't figured out how to post them as just pictures yet.)

Copy the image address (control-click the image for a menu on a Mac) and put it between "img" tags.

The only problem is, your image is too big!
