I'm planning on not buying specially made pots for my plants this year. I'm hoping to use whatever I have to hand; although I will be buying growbags for tomatoes.

do you have any recommendations? anything it's best NOT to use?

so far I have:
a washed out cooking oil bottle for seed propagation (on its side, one side cut off)
a washed out sausage tray
and a pair of sophie's old wellies lol.

One item I find indispensable when you sow seeds early in the year is a light box to stop the seedlings getting leggy.
With one of those you can start your seeds off in the warmth of your house windowsill
There is a description and a picture of one in http://www.selfsufficientish.com/forum/ ... 12&t=18198
Cheap, easy to make and really works ... even without the aquarium tube.

toilet rolls are great for seedling
i also make pots from old news papers
both great as you just plant the whole thing so no root disturbance
i also use saugage tray that i get from work and being 12 inches by 10 inches there are great
put hole in one tray and put that into tray with no holes that way do not have to worry about watering as much
other than that i get i lot of pot from freecycle
