Books to avoid

iv read all the twilight books and thought they were grate!
vampires really do it for me though

my mum likes it too and we went to see one of them in the cinema, we were the oldest people in there ( well my mum was ) it was full of school kids

but the books do drag on a bit, and its annoying that its so obvious whats going on but bella is completely clueless right to the end, and i must admit i skipped a few pages at points when i was getting annoyed

I'm reading a vampire book at the moment which is quite good - it's called Anno Dracula - you might like it, although it's a different style from Twilight (more steampunk). And no-one's sparkly yet, unfortunately ;-).

See, the pedant in me would prevent me from reading something which should be called "Annus Draculae".

I think Anno is ok (dative, in the year) but there's no getting away from the Draculae issue ;-). But you know the two human things the undead lose first are their reflections in mirrors and the ability to form the genitive.

Oo, I'm confused, Dracula is his name, I know it's draculae for the giant vampire bats, but why for the title?

Just because it ought to say in the year (anno) of dracula, and draculae = of dracula (it's also the plural, but when it's singular it means of. For some words). Like anno domini, but dracula declines differently. I have explained that very badly. Don't be put off the book! ;-).

I didn't know the big vampire bats were called draculae, great name for them ;-).

I don't, really ;-). I'm just going by the fact that it's Anno Dracula so half right (by my translation ;-) ) already (although that's getting me into the murky waters of author intentionality...)

And I'm assuming a nod to Anno Domini as being ironically appropriate (although so I suppose on one level would be Annus Mirabilis as well. All very difficult!) .

Ahh, got you. I thought it was a plural thing.

I've read the third one in the series, Dracula Cha Cha Cha, I enjoyed it, but never got around to read the others. Didn't realise it was the third one when I started it.

As for the Twilight series. I got through it all. It does have some ideas that I liked and must confess to enjoying the action once it stopped being about the so-called love story.

Seemed to spend a lot of the book justifying their 2 houses and 3 cars (between a couple) - this in a book about non-consumerism

I'm not sure whether it'd come under books to avoid, but this one we have at work just makes me wonder who would go through all the trouble of collecting enough of their cat's fur to make stuff, surely it'd have to be a certain breed or just take ages until you had enough... Now if it was dog fur, I have LOADS of that.
