Mrs Wombat introduced me to this when she and Nev were over - it's yummy! You can also make a savoury version too, with veg etc

OK I admit I am completely confused. What do you get in the different layers?

And I can't see anything mentioning pastry in the recipe yet Susie has just said her pastry layer was less in evidence in the savoury version.

I don't get it! Wahhhhh!

Cos the recipe (minus the vanilla and dessicated coconut) is basically clafouti or far, which don't have layers. :dontknow:

That's just it - you put all the ingrdients together and during the cooking process they separate out into layers. So when you take it out of the oven you look at it and say - "how did it do that - it's IMPOSSIBLE!"

Yes but - I understood that bit but want to know what the layers are. As it is just a clafouti/far recipe which doesn't have layers, it's just yummy stodge, with cherries or prunes or whatever.

Ah! Well the bottom is a thin pastry, the middle is a sort of egg custard and the top is a crispy coconut. Try it - it's very simple and yummy!

This recipe minus the dessicated coconut (which I hate!) is very French whether sweet or savoury. There's no pastry involved and no layers. :dontknow: (maybe cos I whisk it up with an electric beater?).

But I love it anyway and make cherry or plum or pear clafouti and prune far (same thing, diff name). I don't like the savoury versions though as I tried one with cherry toms and just found it a bit rich and eggy and yukky.

It is also similar to the "Breton Far" pudding which does end up with the layers - pastry, dried fruit then the custardy bit - even though you bung it all in together.

Google "Breton Far aux pruneaux" for recipes. I make it with golden sultanas and apricots instead of just dried prunes.

I do like coconut so I'll give the impossible pie a go. :)

Well I finally got around to trying this and I have to say (in my bestest, poshest voice) "Ooh yes!"

I did a savoury version, so cut out the sugar, coconut and vanilla, and added cheddar cheese, fresh chives and freshly ground black pepper. After whizzing it up I poured it onto a layer of fresh mushrooms. *Putting the posh voice on again* - "it was very nice indeed"
