What does Butternut Squash taste like?

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

What does Butternut Squash taste like?

Post: # 122936Post StripyPixieSocks »

I'm being a little more adventurous this week and have found a lovely recipe for some Buternut Squash.

Now, I've seen them around and have always thought 'yeah I'd like to try that one day' but never actually got around to it.

Being exceptionally short of cash I don't want to buy something I'm not going to like and don't want to waste my money... does anyone have any descriptions about what it tastes like??

Yours... Mrs Adventurous this week lol

It's like a cross between Pumpkin and Sweet Potato. Very delish if you ask me.
Especially roasted.

Ditto on the cross between pumpkin and sweet potato. Can taste lighter.

Very yummy indeed.

Boiled, steamed, baked, fried, in casseroles, etc.

Nice with butter.

Or butter and maple syrup.

Or butter and cinnamon and evaporated cane juice.

Never had Pumpkin either but eat alot of Sweet Potatoes... had some tonight actually YUM!

Will definitely be giving it a try then (sans Parmesan rind whatever that would add in the first place :? )...

I'm making this: Butternut Squash Stew with Rosemary and Tomatoes

The colours are just so warm and lovely I couldn't resist adding it to my recipe collection

my lot like squash soup, with carrots, onion, swede, potato in,but mainly 1 whole squash, and miso soup as stock,
we also roast it chopped up with parsnip, and boiled too,not a favourite like the soup, but sometimes they like it sometimes not,

Butternut squash is probably my favourite vegetable and I would put it in everything if I could. Ditto on the roasting option - Nigella recommended serving with stilton and pecans sprinkled on the top after roasting and was really scrummy. I bought one today and am planning to use some in a risotto, good thing is there will be plenty left for other meals!

I can't wait to try it out now, might become another staple around here if it's as nice as you're all saying (except when it's raw)

I tend to avoid Nigella, I wasn't too keen on her to begin with and having trained to be a chef and being called Lawson my first name having the initial N I tend to get the old "Ohhh you're not related to Nigella are you" thing all the time

My Dad is the Stilton lover in our family... *shudders*

I think the word would be astringent. it tastes like it would be totally inedible cooked too, but the strange fuzzy feeling in the mouth desn't happen when it's cooked. oh go on, try it lol!!!

MAdam Cholet makes an amazing bacon and butternut risotto.

I would recommend the simplest recipe for trying butternut for the first time and one that we have most often.
Just peel, cut into small cubes, toss in olive oil and roast at 200c for about 3/4 hour .... gorgeous
