Another pumpkin thread

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Another pumpkin thread

Didn't want to clog up the other pumpkin threads with my pointless ramblings, but I just wanted to find out if you actually can eat the traditional carving pumpkin (or jack o lantern pumpkin?) or are they completely inedible? I've read that they are not as tasty as other types, but wasn't sure if they were OK with lots of spice & flavoring? Seems a shame to carve it up 7 just chuck the lot on the compost heap? :(

i always have.. and woul unless it said something on it about not for eating.

the scrapings you get from hollowing out can be cooked down to make a pulp - that can be made into pie or cake or ..etc

If the flesh is a nice orange colour then it should be fine to cook with. However I've grown these a couple of times and no matter how long I left the darn things in the sun they just wouldn't ripen up and the flesh was always pale and tasteless inside. The chickens loved the cooked up pulp though, they aren't fussed.

well I used the scrapings from the jack-o-lantern & made pumpkin muffins (thanks to whoever it was who posted the recipe on the 101 uses for a pumpkin thread) & they were delicious! They boys loved them too, so even if the carving pumpkins aren't great in a savory dish, add enough sugar & you can make anything taste nice! lol
