Turnips!

Yesterday a - kind?- neighbour gave me loads of turnips. I would be very grateful if anyone has a good recipe for making them tasty! I can't waste them! Thanks in advance, pbf.

Sorry pbf we've come to the conclusion that we don't like turnips enough to grow them next year - all the recipes we tried tasted of mud (and yes we did wash them thoroughly).

Although we have made some rather tasty, and extremely easy, pickled greens with their leaves.

Maggie, I feel the same, thats why I don't grow them. I suspect people grow them because they are an easy crop! I don't feel I can compost all of them though. pbf.

Do they freeze well? I'd probably clean, chop, and blanch them, and then freeze them on trays, then put into freezer bags. That way you could sneak them into soups or casseroles (I practice guerilla nutrition on my sweetie this way with zuchinni, etc--a Vitamix helps with this too!). I'm with you--can't waste them. Food is too precious.

Susie they are the white ones, and I am halfway through getting them ready for the freezer, I can't bring myself to compost them yet! I did think of asking MKG if he has a wine recipe! I find neighbours only give you what they don't want, bless em! pbf.

I tried growing some last year, because I had free seeds, and thought I might put them in Cornish pasties. I never got that far, though, because the slugs had 'em first. Slug traps?

Maggie thanks for recipe, I am hoping for some more kind neighbours now! It sounds quite simple so I really might give it a go, but don't tell MKG! pbf.

I've been growing Melon Turnips for 3 years now.
They grow like turnips (easy), they look like turnips, they get attacked by flea beetle like turnips, but taste nothing like turnips.
According to the seed catalogue they are supposed to taste like melons, but you have to have a real good imagination, however if you eat them raw (which is the only way we have eaten them) they are sweet, juicy, taste vaguely like radish and go very well in salads.

I like turnips, usually eat them steamed with carrots or roasted in the oven with other veggies, maybe drizzled with chilli oil

steamed or boiled in little water with equal amount of carrots, drain, mash and season with lashings of butter, black pepper and a dash of double cream...
