Campden tablets for fruit preserving

Has anyone tried preserving fruit using Campden tablets? This was the original purpose of them. They were originally known as "Campden fruit preserving tablets".

Never used them solely to preserve fruit, but I have (regularly) used them to sterilise fruit for brewing

Sodium metabisulphite is a fairly common preservative in many foods. I rarely use it (in the form of Campden Tablets) except occasionally to make sure fermentation has stopped before bottling.

I don't see the point of going to the bother of preserving my own fruit - if it's then full of preservatives! Might as well buy stuff that's full of chemicals...

I often bottle fruit (or veg) in screw-top jars, even without sugar, and it keeps perfectly well. And no, I don't even use new tops. They just get sterilised with boiling water.
