Jelly portions

How much is a portion of jelly and/or how many can be got out of a litre of jelly?

I suppose it all depends how much vodka you put in them

We've always counted 8 portions out of a litre. (Without vodka...)

but don't packets of jelly powder (I use vegetarian jelly) come in 1 pint servings, I just looked that is a four person serving, so a litre of jelly should serve more than 8 people unless the person doing the dishing out is sucking up a bit extra

Well - one pint is a lot less than one litre, so if you calculate roughly one litre = two pints, you get your 8 servings from a litre... If your lot like their desserts, I would say six servings in a litre. At home, our family of 4 only ever got a half litre jelly (no pints in Germany!), but then of course that came with vanilla sauce.

Actually, I'd love some jelly... Too much sugar.

I used to buy the vegetarian stuff - just as much sugar, but at least no nasty chemicals - and I used to mix that with rhubarb or berries of whatever kind. Makes it less sweet, and does taste rather nice.

Why not buy leaf gelatine (or veggie alternative) and make your own from scratch with fruit juice or something? I watched something where James Martin made one with whole raspberries and some form of cordial/liqueur (sorry I'm so vague, it was a while ago) and he layered it so it was a bit like a fruit terrine

I used to make my own, but it seems to be difficult to get gelatine here. Bought some at the Polish shop (that was the first time I found it), but the instructions on it are rather vague, and the one time I tried to use it nothing happened - it simply didn't set.
