101 things to put in cooked beans

My crockpot beans could use a new identity. I tend to eat them with potatoes, or over salad, or add some cheese or sour cream. I often cook them with just seaweed, sometimes I use olive oil or sea salt. When a certain gentleman is visiting, I put in bacon or ham, and he gets all those bits. He likes onion and garlic, too. Or salsa. I sometimes put in sauteed carrots or celery. I sometimes serve them on fresh spinach, or chopped celery.

I know lots of folks eat them with grains, and I could cook some teff. But, otherwise I don't eat grains. I don't eat soy or mushrooms either. (Special diet, tricky health challenge.)

What do you put in your beans, either at the beginning of cooking, near the end, or when you put them in a bowl or on a plate?

Sage works very well with oil, garlic and beans. White beans and pasta is nice and hearty as are any minestrone type dishes (add the cooked beans to your soup).

Mixed beans with puy lentils, olive oil, garlic, diced cooked carrots and red pepper and sweetcorn is delicious! Warm through and add to pasta - yum!

Sundried tomatoes. And chorizo for meat eaters. I agree about the red peppers too.

Tomatoes! All kinds of beans whether green beans or podded beans go well in a sauce of tomato, onion and garlic. Add a bit of chilli if you like.

For those of us for whom a bean is a baked thing that comes in a tin can with some kind of orangey red sauce ;) .....

Baked beans cooked up with;

Tabasco sause
Worcester Sauce
Cheese (cheddar's my favourite, although it's a right pain cleaning the saucepan afterwards !)
Diced onion
Crushed or whole Garlic (but not if you're seeing your better half in the near future...)
Random herbs from the garden or kitchen cupboard
Black pepper
Small pieces of (pre-cooked) bacon

Or any / all of the above all thrown in together !

Ah, puzzled over that for a bit but I've come to this topic via posts since last visit, so didn't see what you were looking at!

A big spoonful of pesto goes well with ordinary beans, especially the red pesto with tomato in it.
Baked beans in my humble opinion needs a good splosh of worcester sauce or balsamic vinegar.
