101 great things about where you live

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

101 great things about where you live

Post: # 40831Post Andy Hamilton »

This could end up as a pretty diverse thread as we are from all over the place.

1. Lots of green spaces so get the best of both worlds, town and country. There is a huge park 20mins walk from my house with waterfalls etc in it.
2. The local train, could be more regular but it is a life line between my side of the city and Daves. Much better than riding the bus too.
3. Always new bits to explore. Been in Bristol a year now and still finding new places.

4. being able to stand outside and hear nothing apart from animal noises and smell nothing but... well ok, you can smell animal dung sometimes lol... fresh air. Nothing better than a deep breath of fresh cold crisp air to wake you up in a morning.

5. Being able to really see the stars - no street lighting to dull the effect. I can still remember my first proper starlit night - it was breathtaking.

6. Not being bothered by trick or treaters, guisers, carol singers months before the actual event (on the downside we don't get ANY carol singers here at all, and although I'm not christmassy I do love to hear the songs - they make me cry) what a soppy mare !!

I know the lights waste energy, but I love them anyway.

Hard act to follow chadspeed but;
A true village community, commons, lakes, windmill, view of valley (even when sitting up in bed!) local post office, village shop where people know your name. Transport, buses, station etc. Not bad for a London Borough.
Fancy France though.

Everything else that's been said about country life in general, plus:

43. (?) Wind! ...i.e. really fresh air... And I do really like wind.
44. Our own loch, complete with swans
45. No "fashion" required apart from jeans, woolly jumpers and wellies
46. Rarely too hot in summer (actually, this past summer was getting close to the just bearable!)
47. No shops close by, so no constant temptation to buy this that or the other that you don't really need
48. Folk next door who'll happily feed my animals when I'm on holiday
49. Craft fairs etc in the village, where you get phantastic lunches for a song
50. Village concerts, where everybody takes part from teenage rappers to the granny choir
