Window inspiration needed...

Hi,

My next project is to make some horizontal sliding windows to close in our verandah in winter, and also to make a matching half-glazed door. I've been looking around for information on how to do it and have drawn (not quite, but very close to a) blank. Any recommendations most welcome.

I need to understand the design principles so that it doesn't look clumsy/disproportionate.

I also need to know how they'd be constructed.
- what joints to use where, etc...
- how to weatherproof them (for example to stop water getting into the runners)

This book is on Amazon, which provides some of the information, but I suspect it's not the best suited.

Many thanks.

If anyone's interested, I found the information I wanted, for free, compliments of Project Gutenberg, via this handy selection of links...

There's all sorts there, from timber-framing an entire house, to doors to windows to furniture. Nothing particularly modern, but you wouldn't expect there to be in books dating from the turn of the 20th century.
