We have two and I use the water for the ducks and the chooks. Yes in summer the sides of the IBCs turn a bit greenish but they can be cleaned out with a pressure hose when they are empty. The water doesn't really get mucky inside and if it is just for plants I would just leave it be.

Main thing is to filter the downpipes/gutters that go into the IBCs in the first place. We have found a use for my old tights and stockings that I haven't worn since .... ummmmm..... well a long time ago before I got into welly wearing as a daily habit. :iconbiggrin:

It tends to be the cr@p off the roofs that mucks up stored water rather than the sunlight.
