if you live somewhere rainy they need a separate structure to shelter them from the elements but in optimal conditions they should last indefinitely

There are cob houses, in England, that are several hundred years old. The construction principle is the same, albeit thinner walls for an oven.

I think the main thing is maintaining the outer skin rigorously to keep it water resistant.
