Falling Meat Prices

Post: # 268063Post The Riff-Raff Element »

Actually more heard on the wireless than read, but there was an article this AM about how meat prices are plummeting in France as farmers de-stock in anticipation of higher feed prices over the winter. Free range chickens are down in price 40-50%, for example. Anyone else seeing this? What, I wonder, will happen to feed prices once there are no animals left to feed?

They will make it into bio diesel probably, then use the excuse to add some of tax to it, resulting in the beginning of the end of free range chickens, or am I being over simplistic

Recently the closure of the sugar beet factories(for some intricate and dodgy reasoning, for another time) has meant a massive switch from growing beet(classically a mixed-farm crop).Locally a good deal of Barley is being sent(many miles) to be processed into Glucose, for what purpose,God only knows.

Funny I haven't seen chicken come down in price and I'm always checking on Label Rouge for when they do their occasional promo as that's when I stock up the freezer. Not happening in Brittany!

Intermarché have LR chickens at €2.95 per kilo, apparently. One of our friends' father farms pigs and she reckons pork prices are going to plummet in the near term, but I have to admit it all seems a bit illogical to me.

Meat prices here are really high and wages are really low. A whole small chicken is about 180 denars, about 2.50 pounds. Mince pork is 350 denars a kilo, about 5 pounds. The advrage salary is 250 pounds a month. The government also have a monopoly on the electricity which is rapidly increacing in price. People are protesting, we're signing the petition. People cannot afford to heat their houses for the winter, us included. We've got wood and 3 wood stoves in the house but we're only burning the one in the kitchen, trying to save wood. When it gets too cold to sleep in the bedrooms we will all be sleeping in the livingroom with the wood cooker on.
