We had ITV Westcountry News here this week filming a piece about charcoal production. They have put the video and an article on their website.
For anyone who is interested, here it is:

Interesting piece, well done. Not far from me there's a place where charcoal is made traditionally. They spend a couple of weeks building an enormous pyramid of wood and then fire it.

Out of interest, what's the advantage of using charcoal for a BBQ rather than regular wood and what volume of charcoal do you get from a stere of wood?

Charcoal burns much hotter and lights much quicker than wood. The smoke is dry not humid and therefore grills rather than steams the food. Also charcoal is much lighter than wood and therefore has a lower carbon footprint when transported.

Not sure how large a stere is. Conversion rate is about 1:6 by weight with a ring kiln. Conversion rate with an earth clamp as you describe is much worse.

Thanks for the info. A stere is a cubic metre of wood including air spaces.

We've just been told that they are not airing it thiss week due to a glut of news in the Westcountry. It is still available online though. Hopefully the delay will cause it to be up for longer.

They've told us that it's going out on tonights news at 6pm. We're really hoping nothing newsworthy happens in the South West before 6pm

The North Devon Journal published 2 stories about us today.

One about our business: http://www.thisisdevon.co.uk/Charcoal-c ... z2ZQ2ZUSBQ

and one about Rackenford Primary School's forest school activities in our woods: http://www.thisisdevon.co.uk/Pupils-cla ... z2ZQ2ZUSBQ

The media frenzy continues...
