Coming from a long line of Borderers, Mosstroopers and Reivers, I'd like to correct this. Historically, the Borders belonged to neither Scotland nor England, but were an unruly region that was among the last to be brought under the rule of British law (the Highlands were the last).
In 1605, it was James I & VI who declared the Borders should become subject to the laws of the new Union, and set up a commission to bring this about.
So, how about independence for the Borders instead?
