Flower? Veg? ID please...
Hi everyone,
my friend has got this plant in her garden. It volunteered itself so she hasn't got a clue what it is (there were 3 but she only kept one to see what it was going to grow into). There are little white flowers as you can see and what seems to be mini green fruits (?). Any ideas?
Thanks

I'd say it's definitely in the Solanaceae (Potato) family.... Some species have poisonous fruits though, so I'd wait for a positive ID before doing anything with the fruits.... I'll investigate further in the meantime....

I certainly agree with Tom - and I'd keep my eyes on it, because it looks awfully like some of the chilis I'm growing.

Nightshade, which as others have said is Solanaceae, imo. There is one that is harmelss-ish and one that is called 'deadlt nightshade' for good reason - the flowers on the latter are usually purple.

Definitely of the solanaceae family - doesn't look like a chilli - I think it is a weed as I have similar ones in the veg patch which I rip out and compost. The berries range from edible to deadly - think it's a bit like mushrooms, if in doubt - don't touch!

I think it's Black Nightshade, Solanum nigrum.

Yup, definately. For some reason we've had loads of it in our veg patches this year. ( and yes, they do start off looking like pepper plants!)RuthG wrote:Nightshade, which as others have said is Solanaceae, imo. it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

It's Nightshade and we had this appear in the garden everywhere in about 1976. My father was puzzled by it's sudden appearance en masse not only in our garden but several adjacent ones. A neighbour who knew a bit about birds explained that Starlings will often gorge on the fruits seeds and all and then while in flight the whole flock will empty their bowels at the same time sending a hail of droppings containng seeds!
Just because you see two eyes shining in the jungle at night, do not think that the worse thing that could happen is that you are about to be attacked by a tiger. It could be two one-eyed tigers.

Looks like Huckleberry which also looks like nightshade! I wouldn't risk eating the black berries!
