Hand Spinning Yarn

Post: # 265868Post Megz04 »

Hi,

I live very close to an Alpaca farm, and I want to start hand spinning some fleece for my knitting. Does anyone know a good supplier of drop spinners? Preferably local to Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire so I can go and have a look!!

Thank you

Meg

Sorry Meg, I don't have any brilliant suggestions. But I see that someone called Meg has asked this question on Ravelry too, so I'm guessing it's you! Hope you have more joy there...

I didn't get on at all with spindle spinning, but spinning on a wheel is a whole different kettle of fish!

I have a drop spinner that I bought on ebay - it is an Ashwood which I have been told is the best make. I still havnt quite got the knack of it in practice although how to do it theoretically seems easy!!!

hi meg,
can you explain what you mean with a "drop spinner".
I know about drop spindles. is that what you mean maybe? can recommend UK makers if needed.
or give any spinning advice, really. 10 years experience. both on spindles and wheel. also do alpaca.

I've seen places that tell you how to make them.

Try www.Instructables.com there's probably a few tutorials on there :)

Hi Megz,
If you've got a local wood turning group near you, I'm sure they would be happy to make you one as there's no specialist skills involved.
You may like to have a look at these sites too: http://www.hedgehog-equipment.co.uk/spi ... p-spindles or a bit more upmarket....http://thewoodemporium.co.uk/dropspindles.php

excuse me saying, davie, but there ARE specialist techniques needed to make a well balanced and stable working dropspindle.
there are too many bad ones out there already....
but if you can explain what you need, a more experienced woodturner should be able to deliver.
