Spinning , new skill

Post: # 274770Post Pumkinpie »

Toady I am going to attempt to learn how to spin.
I have wanted to do it for ages and now I have a chance.
Hope to have a fun day spinning and weaving.

hope you had a good day - are you using a spindle or a wheel? I admit to owning a wheel but do way more on drop spindles than the wheel (for which you have to stay in one place ;) )
What sort of fleeces are you using?

Have fun,its one of the best things I ever did, took a while to click but then the worlds your oyster (sort of)
What wheel have you got? mines a Kromski sonata and its fab. Use a spindle too for reenacting.

Wooo that's a pretty wheel, mine is plastics/nylon and breakdownable (new word OED take note) and I can back-pack it on the bike

I just had a go on a spinning wheel at craft class. Three of us had a go on the two wheels brought. The lady who spins made it look so easy! We all managed to produce a couple of metres of not very even yarn. She said we had all done well as her first attempts were not as good as ours and it takes practice. As it is a small group of three or four she is going to let us have some more spinning sessions.

Yes it's great fun, I have learnt lots of new skills and it has given me the enthusiasm to get crafty again now I have retired and in theory got more time. Up to now we have done felting, making jewellery out of thin sheets of metal , toothbrush crochet, broomstick crochet, weaving on to pipe cleaners to make birds, wire crochet to make jewellery . There are lots of exciting things in the pipeline too. I can't wait to do mosaics as I want to do a sign for my allotment.
My latest project is a shawl for the WI craft competition. I am making the pattern up as I go along. It should be exciting as I like experimenting. You ever know what things are going to turn out like when you make them yourself.

Snapdragon Iam curious as to where you bought a Babe wheel?
I am waiting for a drop spindle and some wool to arrive,I may want to progress to wheel in the future if I get the hang of spindle spinning.
It would be great to see pictures of your homemde spindles.i decided to buy my first but may want to make some in the future.

Oh dear, I am so sorry to be so late in replying Tiggy, I lost contacts and then couldn't get back to forums.
I bought the wheel on €bay, a young lady in Sussex had a few to sell as she'd had to buy a 'lot' to get hers from USA.
Not sure I can post pics as I don't have a photo 'host' any more , unless the yahoo thingy works here in which case I will try.
