Inspect your broccoli carefully, before eating...I didn't =)

Post: # 230365Post chuck_n_grace »

Last night for dinner, I gathered three types of lettuce, onions, radishes and broccoli. I brought them inside, rinsed them and put them into a large salad bowl. I added a nice low cal Basalmic dressing.

I started my favorite TV program and began to eat. After several delicious bites I looked down. On top of the salad was a large piece of broccoli. On top of the broccoli there were 8 green 1/2" caterpillars. There were several others crawling on the adjacent lettuce. :?

I took the salad back to the sink and pulled out each piece of broccoli. I sifted through the remainder of the full bowl and pulled out any green caterpillar. There were only about 6.

I resumed my TV program and continued to eat. I made sure I "did not look at the salad". Sometimes ignorance is bliss. The salad was delicious.

Have any of you eaten bugs unintentionally...or even on purpose??

Regards,
Chuck

The old saying, Chuck - if there's one thing worse than finding a caterpillar in your lunch, it's finding half a caterpillar ...

Couple of years ago, while staying at the outlaws in Emiglia Romagna (where by the grace of God we will be in 3 weeks) i picked several pounds of plums, and excitedely emersed them in several bottles of Vodka. Two weeks later dozens of maggots (locally known as 'baygies ' had floated to the top.I scooped them off and the resulting brew was excellent, threw the baygies away, but on reflection they might have been quite good too.

Eating your enemy will give you strength for many battles to come. Be thankful for the extra protein at least

An annual conversation with half-drunk dinner guests, consuming my elderflower champagne:
"This is really nice but what are the black bits?"
"Thunderflies. Don't worry about them."

Hello there ,

been there , done that . Also picked Broccoli and later seen in the pan Broccoli or something else creeping away with a burnt ass.
The caterpillar's had done a good camouflage job , exactly the same colour . at dinner just ate . Later mentioned that the
Broccoli was full of extra protein , the guest's looked at me suprised , some did not even believe it .
Dinner was good though ,

regards ,

Paul

Soak stuff like that in salty water straight after picking. The bugs will come out!

Our lettuce, spinach and radishes are so delicious that I had to keep eating. I battled the yuck factor by using my hand to grab 'supposedly' completed compost...only to find really gooey stuff dripping from my fingers. After a while I got used to it.

Excellent idea! Thanks.

I figure getting back to nature (self-sufficiency) would involve getting dirtier...having dirt beneath my finger nails, coming into contact with insects, lizards, and snakes. Didn't figure on eating the bugs though.

Regards,
Chuck

I remeber my father telling me tales of when he lived in the bush, eating bananas in the dark so he couldn't see the fruit fly larvae. (He lived to be 82)
