Richard III Found!!?
Richard III Found!!?
Rhyming Slang aside......It's got to be another Piltdown Man, but just in case it's true, and if you don't bother with the papers,it seems that his body could well have been found .....under a council car park in Leicester!
Following on from the remarkably good Olympic opening ceremony in the true nature of British self-deprecation,I think we should leave him where he is,and put everything back the way it was.In order to show a measure of respect,we could mark the spot; something along the lines of ..

It's amazing what you can find under a car park. Byron's under one too. What makes me wonder about Dick 3 is why? We know he's there somewhere, we know he's dead and we know he had bones. I can understand the search for the church, but bones? What are we going to do with them? (I bet I know - they'll be reburied in exactly the same place with a bit of a service).
So, in the end, we'll have a car park and we'll know that there's an old church and Dick's bones down there. Which, actually, we already knew.

I was listening to all this on Radio 4 while driving up the A9. They were fairly certain it's R111 because the skeleton had scoliosis. But it was only about a fortnight ago that Radio 4 interviewed some bod who said the version of R111 as hunchback was just propaganda by Lancastrians and there's no real evidence for it.

Indeed - in fact, there's evidence against it: the painting which depicts him as hunchbacked has been X-ray analysed, and it's been altered. The hunch was painted in at a later date. However, they do have a direct descendant of his sister there to do a DNA comparison.

I saw an interview with him,an unassuming Canadian......it's got to be Rag Week surely?
Anyhow my point remains the same, why let an airbrushed, regicidal loser disrupt important council business? It's a disgrace.

It's the spirit of inquiry OJ - very valuable.oldjerry wrote: Anyhow my point remains the same, why let an airbrushed, regicidal loser disrupt important council business? It's a disgrace.
And it gives various specialists the opportunity to exercise their various skills.
A visitors centre containing an exhibition could be built in a corner of the carpark to house the bones and to attract bus loads of passing North American tourists who might be dimly related to Dicky III. Their generous donations would provide gainful employment for one or more otherwise unemployable history graduates, and of course the construction itself would provide a valuable income for a local family-run firm of builders.
Finally the nearest pub could be renamed the Richard III with an attached family restaurant, perhaps called the (My Kingdom for a) Hungry Horse, serving things like the Princes in the Tower skewered mixed grill, the world famous Hunch Burger and Bosworth Bangers & Mash.

Re: Richard III Found!!?
One of my hobbies is re-enactment and the period I do is the wars of the roses, second half of the fiftheenth century. To be completely honest our group concentrates on the lives of the common man as most of us are artisans of one sort or another. We feel that although history is written about kings and nobles it is made by ordinary people. However, groups are formed around a "household" and ours is that of Sir Walter Devereux not that he ever appears but it's funny how often we get asked if we are yorkist or lancastrian and when we reply yorkist a lot of people then go on to say "good on yer" , as if it really matters which accident of birth rules the country and gets to spend our tax money.

I caught an early morning tv news report before the annocemennt and they had traced an American sounding desendant of Richard's sister and were swabing his mouth to trace the dna.
Now it's confirmed it makes me wonder what the council will do to try and exploit their royal connection

Re: Richard III Found!!?
He was a human once - he should have a decent burial. The part I don't understand is the need for a multi-faith ceremony. Surely he would have been a Catholic, right? So 500 years after his crippled body had been knocked off his horse, his brain smashed in by some halberd-sporting Tudor-supporting man-at-arms, dragged around the streets like a GI in Mogadishu, stabbed a few more times post mortem, stripped naked, buried without ceremony, dug up, stuffed into a hole that was too small for him, and had a car park slapped on top of him, now they're going to subject his everlasting soul to some politically-correct service? You've got to feel sorry for him.
