Well tis so that the stocking up is taking place from - a supermarket! Delivered to the door tomorrow before they want to sell you all the silly seasonal stuff that costs an arm and a leg and never gets used.

It should then be some time before another stocking up is required. Like this time next year

I had a little stock shop yesterday. Should happily see us through to our Christmas shop which, mercifully, won't be a major event this year.

Peering onto a shelf looking for some vanilla essence for something (none) I did a date check on the herbs and spices.

Hmm - now I have a lot of polenta to use up (instead of spuds I think) and a lot of herbs that don't go with any special recipe. Light bulb moment - thought that to cheer up the poIenta I would use the herbs!

Have also discovered other things that need using up - home made scones, chocolate cake and such like coming up. What to do with golden syrup is the question.

Must be more careful about what I buy to go with what and then forgetting the recipe!

Is it wrong to admit that I love golden syrup? It's so evocative of my childhood. We had it on bread and butter and in our porridge. It was a right of passage moving from golden syrup, on our pancakes, to sugar and lemon.

Sorry, that's probably not much help. Like you I've got a part-used tin lurking in the back of the pantry cupboard that I don't really know how to use. I must have bought it years ago but can't think what for now. But as it will probably never go off I just leave it there until inspiration strikes - and of course you know I won't be able to find it then.

We have a walk in larder that is now completely empty.
All the walls are rough rendered and the outside wall has had a thriving colony of black mould for a few years now. So it is all cleared out in preparation for covering all the walls with white tiles from floor to ceiling. Just bought 9 square metres of white ceramic tiles from B&Q on the old fogies 10% off Wednesdays.
Anyway, the things that got found were amazing. Spices that had a best before in the nineties and quite a few that were bought before "best before" was required. We now have a wonderful smelling compost heap.

Not only a part used tin of golden syrup, but also part used tins of black treacle and black strap molasses, none of which I can now eat (maybe the molasses in moderation)
The golden syrup also brings back memories of childhood tea times, syrup and home made butter mashed together on your plate and then spread on bread. I remember fondly the bright orange butter made from Jersey milk.
No porridge though, brought up on a smallholding we had eggs every day for breakfast.

I used to buy herbs and spices in bulk (from SUMA). One tip: Never buy dried mixed herbs in a 500g bag! It's huge!!! I gave away quite a lot of it - still have about half left, and it's been out of date for about 10 years... Still use it occasionally, when the herbs in my garden need a bit of supplementation.
I'm also on the last 12.5kg box of raisins. They are still ok, if a bit dry and cloudy looking. I don't eat them myself, but feed them to the birds.

I think that a vegan treacle tart might be a good idea to use up the golden syrup.

OK I won't then Maggie as I'm getting plump too!

You got any other good ideas that aren't fattening? Nope - me neither - that's the trouble with treacle and golden syrup.

And a chocolate cake has helped to use up some stuff - funny but the local kids never refuse chocolate cake.

If I do one are you going to nip all the way down here? Shall I do some fruit scones and a banana cake as well just to use up some more stuff?
