One maybe strange sounding, but not unprecedented effect it had here: the bus I was on coming back from Aberdeen yesterday broke down... Those wonderful, modern, top-of-the-range buses they have on this service can't deal with a bit of wind. I gets under the door seals, and when they can't close properly, the bus can't go. Due to the fact that wind is not uncommon here, it happens quite frequently...

Well we have entered the Hurricane season now, traditionally January is a very windy month, but we seem to have had hurricanes most of the year, does this mean they might have to employ someone as official storm namer, could become a full time occupation. I don't know about bus problems as we don't have any where I live

It hasn't been windy here in recently in the day though I did suffer from flying greenhouse plastic panes one night last month. The main problems with wind here is when the buses from this northern county can't get over the river bridges to go into Newcastle-on-Tyne. Causes problems as the bus depot for the 80% of county buses is called the Riverside and is over the bridges over the Tyne.

But yes, know the problem with buses where the doors won't close and so the bus goes nowhere. Doesn't just happen in your neck of the woods ina.

Dylan was not a problem here, just a breezy day.
I agree with DnD about January though, the forecast for here is very windy again for Tuesday and Wednesday, peaking at 65 mph. Just means I have to make sure the tunnel doors are firmly closed.
No fancy modern buses here either, just local mini-buses based on Transit vans with ordinary van doors.

Dylan missed us entirely. I think the jet stream, or whatever it is that decides the path of these things, must have moved south as we seem to be getting the best of the weather - for now.

You'd think they'd have found a solution for that by now, wouldn't you?! Kind of emergency bolts for windy weather - or something else mechanical rather than relying on sensors...

Luckily (for us) the bridges that are often closed are further south.

We have a bad one headed our way, due to hit later today. The central pressure is lower than that of many hurricanes, and the winds will be of hurricane strength. It won't be fun. The road over the mountain is already dodgy from previous storms; this one is going to make it impassable for a while.

We have the generator pushed into the wood shed where it's close enough to be useful. We have spare jerry cans of fuel. Lots of food on hand, and wood close by for the wood stove. We'll be fine, but we're not looking forward to it.

Thanks. It was a doozy, but no damage at our place. We didn't even lose electricity. I guess the generator did its job. ;)

That's very good to hear, KL.

Following a storm a couple of years ago, where we were without power for a week (although they managed to get power through to us for at least an hour in every 24hr period - so no refunds) we invested in one of those small suitcase generators. It's just powerful enough to run the CH pump and freezer and probably a lamp and laptop.

Anyway, it has worked perfectly - we haven't had even a flicker of power outage since (and the gal gets free petrol every six months when we replace the jerry can contents)

From what I've read it would seem that the public pay more attention if a storm is named. Anicdotally I've noticed people do speak more of a named storm than just bad weather although whether they then take more precautions or heed the warnings more is probably a different question.
