he was a terrorist anyway

but I object to Guy Fawkes being attached to bonfire night. bonfire night is a much older celebration so :geek:

I was just chatting to my neighbour about this...

All the major religions have a light/ fire based festival this time of year. It has nothing to do with the reasons we are given as to the celebration.

It is a festival of lights at a time of year when the nights are getting longer, and maybe we should put an end to the division that these festivals have come to represent.

Anyone else want a shot of this soapbox?

I casually mentioned Bonfire Night celebrations to a Northern Irish work colleague a few years back and he, rather more pointedly, informed me that no, he would not be partaking in any ritual Catholic-burning festival. I think that he has a point. Love fire and pyrotechnics but not so keen on the burn the body aspect.

I see it as one of the ways the old church used to smother the even older religion's bone-fire festival - as with the false timings of many other church festivals
a canadian colleague is totally confused by the whole thing - after all we're not encouraged to chop heads off pretend kings/queens or sink foreign ships at other times of the year.
