I used to suffer with chronic migraines, and found lavendar to be really overpowering a scent, but used to make up an almond oil base with some lemon zest and rub that into my temples after sticking it into the fridge for a couple of hours. Very soothing. Just massage it in with little circles.
Different things work for different people and your sense of taste and smell go right out of the window, the smell of peppermint would make me puke!
Before making anything, try a few samples out on your friend so that she gets what works for her.
But - what a lovely thoughtful gesture - your friend is very lucky.
