AVG Anti-virus 8.0/Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Tomorrow's World was a show on BBC TV about innovations and tech stuff and I thought a good name for our computing and tech section.

Has anyone upgraded? Updates for 7.5are about to stop but I have read reviews about 8.0 being a resource hog?

the word is that it's a Vista thing - Microsnot are insisting that the "free" programmes become "pay", and another board I frequent is awash with grizzles about the new pay version........ :?
Word is that "Avast" is far better
Now if you were using Linux, you'd be laughing your head off at these poor people paying for antivirus software.........paying for software, antivirus programmes, firewalls, how old fashioned -, how Windoze!

I left AVG a while back and am now using Kasperskey.. ok it's not free but it's not extortionate either, and it appears (to me) to do a better job. It certainly picked up some things that neither AVG or Norton (spits!) picked up.

I'm still tempted by linux but am scared to try it out. I've got vista on new computer and it works ok (mostly) - I was given a copy of Ubuntu on cd last year but am still dragging feet about it cos I really don't understand computers that well. I'd hate to take vista off my new computer and install ubuntu and find that nothing works and that I can't reinstall vista cos I've not got the discs (preinstalled version etc)

Norton (spits too!)

I am still toying with invetigatin Linux. You may recall my 'convince me thread' on this topic about a year ago. I did get the live boot CD but lo and behold my wireless card wouldny work.

I now have a new Dell Vostrol 1500 and I tried to boot from the CD about a week ago. Nowt. Nothing! I have done a few searches on t'internet and have read reports that the Vostro 1500 card wont work either.

Go on Martin! Push me - give me the shove I need! (Can I hog my own thread??)

Do what I did and install Ubuntu on the same machine. You can then choose when you boot which you want to run and can therefore have the best of both worlds.

Even if you have a disk of Ubuntu already try and download the latest version because it is much better and has less security holes *

* Yes Linux suffers from people hacking it as well, just less so than Windows because it is less popular and therefore gets targeted less. For now at least.

I'll keep it really simple - I went with Wubi - it is SO simple, you download a smallish programme (about 1mb), and then fire it up in Windoze, choose "Ubuntu", and leave it to download - it's a biggie! - around 700mb, so expect a lengthy download. If by any chance the line drops, or the download gets interrupted, don't panic, just go through the same steps with Wubi, and it'll start from where it left off. Once it's all downloaded, leave it to "compile" for about three-quarters of an hour - then t'is done!
From then on, every time you boot up, you have a choice - Windoze, or a REAL operating system.................
You could do that, or just download Ubuntu, burn it onto a cd, and go that route. Whichever way you get there, at first you may be seized with panic - it LOOKS different, and by god it fired up fast! Just follow your nose - it "just does it" - it'll probably pick up all your internet or wifi settings -if it doesn't, just click about a bit - it is strangely LOGICAL compared to Windoze - there is even a button clearly marked for the "power down" options (no more using the "start" button to switch off) :dave:
Then have a rootle about - Open Office for instance - open up a "doc" - you'll find it opens up perfectly, you can work on it in a very familiar environment, and then save it as a "doc"...........everything is SO much faster and slicker, because it's good programming (unlike Microsnot's layer upon layer of dross).........you'll love it! And it's FAR quicker to get to know than Vista!
And as for paying for software............you jest, surely, PAY for software, how silly! - apllications - add/remove - choose from THOUSANDS of free and groovy programs - two clicks to download and install.......
(Martin's hot tip - if you like internet radio, go for "tunapie", and "xmms" - connect to good bassy sound system, and prepare to boogie! :dave: )

Well that was a close thing.... I installed Wubi and let it do its thing. Rebooted as prompted and was sooo pleased when I saw the Heron on my desktop. Then various wee install windows..checking...installing....but it hung on one and would not get past. I should have written it down but didn't. I think it was trying to create a (virtual?) partition or something similar.

Was REAL worried when booting up again in Windows...had the starting up screen for about 5 minutes! Heart in mouth or what!

I think I will download the ISO over night and try booting from the CD in the morning. I so want this to work!

Just be aware that Ubuntu doesn't work with all hardware so it's worth trying from a bootable CD first. 8.04 is much better hardware-wise but some of the problems I've seen people have are no sound, bad (if any) graphical environment and wireless not working.

that's precisely why I suggested "Wubi" - if there are any major problems, you can just delete the whole thing in Windoze! Having used it myself, and advised loads of friends to do the same, I have never found any major problems - unlike Vista which has reduced many to tears with hardware/software incompatabilities!
