Healthy-ish confectionery - nice to make with kids, too

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

Healthy-ish confectionery - nice to make with kids, too

Post: # 11057Post ina »

To get kids (and yourself) to eat more fruit, try dried fruit in chocolate!

Nicest, I think with dried apricots: Half dip apricots in melted chocolate (the darker the better). Even posher if you press a skinned almond on it before it cools completely. Makes a nice homemade gift from children, too.

I also like prunes in chocolate - was given some by a friend once and found the combination really nice.

More complicated, but very yummy: Stuffed figs
You have to find fairly soft, large figs (but not the partially re-hydrated ones, they are too soft). Make sure they have a nice shape when you pull up the stem. Slit open one side and stuff with marzipan. I like to use honey marzipan (have made my own in the past), and it's nice with a bit of chopped crystallised ginger in it. Close slit and dunk the whole fig into chocolate, leaving the stem free. Quite a mouth full...

Carrot fudge sounds good!

I must be a total bore and just say that raisins are terrible for teeth... sticky AND sweet... the chocolate is good though...

I used to give raisins to J as a snack, but now only give them as part of a meal.

Yum, I've made carrot halva before and it is delicious. One thing I really miss about not living in London anymore is Indian sweets. :(

sounds like the sort of thing to cook while you are nattering with a friend and consuming a bottle of wine.
2 hours stood at the stove stirring the pot all the time needs some perks

Does sound yummy though - I haven't tried carrot halva but have eaten sesame halva before.

It also sounds like something you should only attempt if you have an Aga or a Rayburn that is on anyway - otherwise the cost of this confectionary would be astronomical!
